Is it better to start a child in pre-k sooner or later?

In conventional practices, young kids aged four to five should be in a pre-k program. One
reason for this is that a five-year-old can enroll in kindergarten in the U.S. It is a choice in some
states but mandatory for others. But this doesn’t mean parents cannot have reasons to start
their children in pre-k sooner or later. Moreover, the decision for this depends on several
considerations.

When should it be later?

If there is one thing that makes it clear that a child should wait for one more year is the age
during the enrollment period. Evidently, some enrollees emerge too young to be in pre-k
because their birthdays fall only a few months before the start of the school year. For example,
in Virginia, the common practice is kids should be four years old on or before September 30. In
that sense, a child who just turned this age in July or August may be considered young for pre-
k. But in some schools, children who will turn four at least one to three months after September
30 can be admitted. According to most school policies, enrolling in the next school year is
recommended when a young child is too young or lacks months
.

On the other hand, parents also need to consider other important things apart from the age
requirement like the following:

Readiness to be away – Understandably, first-time schoolers experience difficulty separating
from their parents or guardians, even for a few hours. Thus, it is expected that they need an
adjustment period that takes a few days or weeks. But there are instances when children cannot
be away from their parents, and attending classes becomes too stressful.
Therefore, it’s good to prepare a child to be independent and comfortable socializing with other
people before schooling. These prevent them from being uneasy and instead enjoy their
classes.

Potty training – While some schools are open to potty training, the trained kids most likely get
more smooth sailing school days. They can avoid the worrying of going to the comfort room and
asking for help when they need it.

Expressing oneself – Children in school often interact with one another and their teachers. But
interaction will be difficult for kids who don’t know how to communicate or express ideas. On top
of this, they may feel alone and don’t get the necessary help. Thus, it can be very beneficial
when a child is taught to open up or express feelings and thoughts.

When does it look like sooner?

If all the items above are checked, and especially a child can follow instructions and adjust to
routines
, then starting pre-k sooner is no problem.

Moreover, some children need immediate guidance when they are already exhibiting
development in learning skills. Instead of hampering their progress, nurturing their skills and
talents is better. And educators in pre-k can be a big help for parents to do this.
Another essential point of starting pre-k sooner is when kids are about to enter kindergarten. It
is a perfect program that offers lessons and activities that make young pupils all set for their
primary education but fun-filled activities and a caring approach.
